The Matsya dynasty reached its apex in the fifth century BC, marking the beginning of Bharatpur's history. The Matsyas were the Pandavas' allies in the Mahabharata war. According to legend, the name Bharatpur comes from Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Ram. The other brother, Laxman, was given the most important position and eventually became the family god of the Bharatpur royal dynasty. His name appears on both the state seal and coat of arms.

Maharaja Suraj Mal created the foundation for Bharatpur and seized possession of the fort of Bharatpur by conquering the opposing chieftain Khemkaran at the start of the 18th century. The gallant Maharaja is credited for building the many forts and palaces that can be seen throughout the nation, most notably the Pleasure Palace Complex at Deeg, and he was keen to develop the cities.

Bharatpur is also home to Keoladeo Ghana National Park, one of the best places in the world to see birds (KNP). On this place, 250 years ago, a marsh was made possible by embankments built by the monarch of the time to allow for flooding. Birds that migrate through this 29 square kilometre man-made marsh include ducks, geese, waders, raptors, flycatchers, and others. Its name refers to the dense vegetation that envelops an old Shiva Temple. The park is visited in the winter by enthusiastic birders and ornithologists to see and study the feathered wonders. In addition to the more than 370 identified species, KNP once hosted the Siberian crane. It is a World Heritage Site.

BHARATPUR PALACE AND MUSEUM

An extensive collection of historical artefacts, including 581 stone sculptures, 861 pieces of regional art and craft, and old writings that highlight the unique art and culture of Bharatpur, can be found at the Kamra Khas museum, which is located on the grounds of the Bharatpur Palace. The palace itself was built throughout the years by several Maharajas and is a stunning fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The different apartments of the palace contain floor tiles with a variety of exquisitely designed patterns and ornamentation.

GANGA MANDIR

The Ganga Mandir, a magnificent temple in Rajasthan, is situated in the heart of the city of Bharatpur. It has the magnificent Ganga Maharaj deity made of pure white marble. Maharaja Balwant Singh started building this temple in the middle of the 19th century. He asked all the affluent people in the city to give one month's wages to help with the building of the temple, which was a somewhat strange request.

LAXMAN MANDIR

This temple is well-known for its traditional Rajasthani architecture and gorgeous pink brickwork because it honours Laxman, Lord Rama's brother. Visitors will be charmed by the exquisite flower and bird sculptures on the walls, pillars, ceilings, and arches.

KEOLADEO GHANA NATIONAL PARK

Every year throughout the winter, a variety of migratory waterfowl species, including cranes and green sandpipers, pass through the park. It was constructed as a small reservoir in the middle of the 18th century, 5 kilometres southeast of Bharatpur. The building of the Ajan Bund (dam) and the subsequent flooding of this natural depression resulted in the creation of one of the most distinctive and beautiful bird reserves in the whole world. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is said to be one of today's richest bird habitats.

LOHAGARH FORT

True to its name, Lohagarh Fort resisted several British assaults until being taken by Arthur Wellesley. Lohagarh Fort stands out from other forts because it exudes a sense of untamed strength rather than being flashy. A moat that was formerly filled with water to deter invaders surrounds the fort. The fort's Kothi Khas, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal, and Kishori Mahal are all noteworthy structures. To honour triumphs against the Mughals and the British, Raja Suraj Mal constructed the Jawahar Bhurj and Fateh Bhurj.

DEEG

North of Bharatpur is Deeg, a charming garden town. The environment is further beautiful by the city's numerous elegant palaces. Deeg's centrepiece is a magnificent fort surrounded by moats and gates. Forts, castles, gardens, and fountains may all be found in Deeg. It is situated on a small elevation and was built by Raja Suraj Mal. Despite the city's interior being on the verge of collapse, the watch tower with a pistol continues to maintain watch over it.

BAND BARETHA

The Forest Department is in charge of managing Band Baretha, a historic Bharatpuri wildlife reserve. The Kakund River dam was built between 1866 and 1897 AD by Maharaj Jaswant Singh and Maharaj Ram Singh. The palace was built by Maharaj Kishan Singh inside the reserve, which is controlled by the Bharatpur royal family. Band Baretha is a bird watcher's paradise because to its richness of more than 200 bird species, including the rare Black Bittern.

KAMAN

The natives often refer to Kaman as Kamaban. North of Bharatpur sits this ancient settlement, which is a part of the Brij area where Lord Krishna spent his formative years. It is a place of pilgrimage that is a part of the Banyatara and is frequented each year by a sizable number of Vaishnavs. The Chaurasi Khamba ruins, a temple/mosque with 84 pillars, are the principal attraction.
